Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to do full contact martial arts training?
No, you don't. The training is different for each and every student in the school. Students are encouraged to develop their abilities at a pace that is comfortable for them without pressure.
If a student is not ready for one aspect of training, they can work on another area developing internal strength and giving them confidence.
That being said, all students must respect that both Xing Yi Quan and Bagua Zhang are Martial Arts.
Does Bagua Academy focus on training forms for Aesthetic Performance Arts or for the purpose of Beauty of Movement?
No. The school does not focus at all on the training of forms for the purpose of aesthetic performances, nor does it direct training toward public display of the beauty of movement.
While this can be a good pursuit in of itself, students must understand that this discipline is not Martial Arts, nor have the expectation that this path will lead to abilities in protecting oneself.
Do I have to study all Internal Arts in the school? Can I study just Xing Yi?
Can I study only Bagua?
Is it ok if only want to work on Qi Gong without doing Martial Arts?
Yes, you can. The school has an intricate and complex curriculum, so you can most definitely specialize in an area that you feel drawn to.
However, it is recommended to be open minded to all teachings in the school to gain maximum benefit.
Having an open mind to different areas of training also can also broaden the potential for physical transformation.
Is Xing Yi Quan effective as a Martial Art? Is it useful for Self Defense?
Xing Yi is extremely effective both as Martial Art and for Self Defense. Training is initially very direct and assertive, with practicality favored over beautiful movements. The Internal Art is also very focused on developing the emotional and mental faculties of the practitioner.
While it is a highly practical Internal Martial Art, the experience of the teacher is, in fact just as important as the art itself.
At Bagua Academy, we believe that if one is to teach people to defend themselves - it is essential for the master, teacher or instructor to have extensive and deep experience before helping others.

Will I get stronger by training at Bagua Academy?
You will most definitely get physically stronger training at Bagua Academy. You will develop a type of strength that goes far beyond the surface.
However, the training does take time and focus. Do not expect to look completely different in the beginning stages. Internal Development is different for each person.
All students transform in their own way and develop their own unique skills.
Is Xing Yi similar to Tai Chi?
Yes, in many ways. Xing Yi, Bagua and Tai Chi all belong to the same family of Internal Martial Arts and share many interrelated principles. While outwardly they may appear very different, many of the internal technicalities are similar.
Xing Yi however, may appeal to people who have a preference for a more assertive approach with faster and more vigorous methods of training.
Can Xing Yi and Bagua be combined?
Yes, definitely. While students at the school are initially taught to clearly and separately distinguish their unique qualities - the two arts can be seamlessly integrated as they advance in progression.
